Emotionally Based School Avoidance/Barriers (EBSA) to education

This training session will focus on how to support children to return to school who are currently experiencing barriers to education We will look at some theory behind this as well as strategies and techniques that have been used in the ERP.

Everyone experiences ‘demand avoidance’ (resistance to doing something that is requested or expected of you) sometimes. However, here we use demand avoidance to mean the characteristic of a persistent and marked resistance to the demands of everyday life, which may include essential demands such as eating and sleeping as well as expected demands such as going to school or work. This training will focus on direct and indirect demands and how to support pupils who are triggered by their use.

A chance for parents and carers, Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCOs), teachers, and teaching assistants to have the opportunity to speak to a Speech and Language Therapy (SaLT) for advice regarding children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCNs).

Visual supports (Early Years Foundation Stage and non -speaking children)

This session will look at the visual supports we can use to scaffold language development for children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) or who are non-speaking. There will also be ideas and suggestions as to how to scaffold and develop engagement in interactions, where this is appropriate.

Pica

Pica is the persistent eating of non-nutritive substances for a period of at least 1 month. Good assessment of a person’s pica is very important, although this can be a long and complex process. Through this training you will learn about how to support young people with this condition in the classroom context.

An opportunity to jointly moderate with ERP/Home School staff to ensure there is a consistent approach towards assessment.

Support will be provided to Home Schools to interpret our data tool to fit with individual Home School reporting systems.
